Ready Set Work: LASG Begins Placement of 2,000 Graduates

Ready Set Work, RSW Initiative Lagos State Government Begins Placement of 2,000 Graduates on Paid Job Internship with over 200 Reputable Employers of Labour.

Lagos State Government, at the weekend, stated that the process of placing 2000 graduates of the Ready. Set. Work, RSW initiative on paid job internship with over 200 reputable employers of labour has commenced.

Speaking at the commencement of the placement exercise at the Main Auditorium of University of Lagos, UNILAG, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh said that successful candidates out of the 5000 beneficiaries of the programme would be interviewed by the participating organisations and successful candidates given internship placement for a period of three to six months.

Bank-Olemoh stated that other graduates of RSW who don't get internship placement due to the limited capacities of the various organisations could also utilise the knowledge acquired during the 13 weeks training programme to create job opportunities for themselves through their acquired skills.

“The ultimate intention of the State Government is not the job placement per se but the impartation of life-skills in our graduates to change in their mindsets and orientation. Lagos graduates should be the best and they must be able to compete with their contemporaries anywhere in the world”, the Special Adviser stated.

He urged those who would be absorbed by the private firms for the paid internship to see the opportunity as a rare privilege and make the best use of it, saying "This is a once in lifetime opportunity. It is the level of commitment and dedication that you put into your internship that would determine if these organisations would eventually consider you for permanent employment".

Also speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe described the RSW and the presence of over 200 companies interacting with students as a very unique programme by the State Government.

He said that the decision of the State government to develop the skills and potentials of students was in line with the direction of the University tailored towards innovation, incubation, and entrepreneurship.

“This is all that governance is about; improving the quality of our students and introducing them to employment opportunities. This is similar to what obtains in the developed world and I am glad our government is also following this same path”, the Vice-Chancellor stated.

He informed that the University was happy to partner with the State government in hosting the event just as she expressed the readiness of the institution to continue to play host to subsequent editions of the programme.

Ogundipe advised the students to see the RSW initiative as a platform to launch themselves to higher pedestal just as he called on the government to sustain the initiative, saying that the results of the RSW would become more evident within the next three to four years.
