Admission Requirements and Application Guidelines

A. Health Information Management

This programme is designed to provide the technician with knowledge, skill to assists in planning, collating, discriminating, monitoring and manage information required at the local, state and federal levels in other to ensure effective and comprehensive national health care delivery.

Objectives of the Programme

At the end of the course, a technician of this programme should be able to:

i. Assists in planning and organizing health information services in health delivery system.

ii. ii. Organize and control health records, under supervision, in health establishment.

iii. iii. Collect, store, retrieve and preserve health information.

iv. iv. Collect, analyze, present health statistical data under supervision.

v. v. Participate in planning quality control evaluation, researches in health delivery system and other relevant communities in defining, stand health information.

vi. vi. Assist in designing standardizing and controlling health record form. LEVELS OF THE PROGRAMME

Health Information Technician i.e. certificate course in health information management.


Its duration shall be three academic sessions of six semesters including supervised clinical work experience (S.I.W.E.S.)

Admission Requirements

The prospective candidates intending to read for Technical course in health information management must possess a minimum of five passes, three of which must be at credit level at a sitting at the senior secondary school certificate examination (S.S.C.E.) or its equivalent. Subjects to be passed must include English language, mathematics, biology or health science and two other subjects. In exceptional cases, matured candidates with fewer qualifications but with at least 7 years working experience in the Nigerian Health information management board.

B. Community Health Department

Community Health came into being along with Primary Health Care. It is as a result of shortage of manpower in the health sector then, health service delivery coverage was grossly inadequate because the under served population was about 70-80%.

Before the inception of this course, there is already in existence the Medical Doctors who received their training in the Universities, the Nurses and midwives in the schools of Nursing, the Environmental Health workers in Schools of Hygiene etc. Health workers then were seen like angels, free relationship between the society and health workers was very little. Now with inception of Primary Health Care and its’ principles, the Community Health Workers who are its’ legitimate/purposeful children delivers healthcare service to individuals and families in a scientifically sound, socially acceptable, and affordable manner at their door steps. Hence the proportion of service delivery becomes very high and life expectancy also increased.

The courses started as pioneers’ courses in the Schools of Health Technologies with certificates for Community Health Aides, Community Health Assistants, and Community Health Supervisors and diploma for Community Health Officers training in University Teaching Hospitals. Now the training is improved in the schools/College of Health Technology, we have certificate in Community Health (JCHEW), diploma in Community Health (CHEW) and higher diploma in Community Health (CHO) to be trained in the University Teaching Hospital.

Admission Requirements

Entry requirements for certificate course is five passes in pure sciences including English and Mathematics while for diploma it is five credit passes in pure sciences including English and Mathematics 

C. Medical Laboratory Science

Medical Laboratory Science is a profession that cuts across a wide spectrum of healthcare on account of the vital role it plays on the health of patient. The diagnosis involves the use of body fluid e.g. blood, semen, pus, feaces, urine and have drastically helped in disease management, fore casting and management of disease ailment as well as public health surveillance. The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria train and license three different Cadres of professions. They include Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), and Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA).

The MLS training takes a period of six years, MLT takes a period of three years while MLA takes a period of two years.

Just like other health profession in the country, the Medical Laboratory is regulated by Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) which was empower by act no 11 0f 2003 to regulate the practice of medical laboratory science in Nigeria further more to eradicate the worrisome menace of impersonators and quacks in the profession.


The act no 11 2003 guide all practitioner of Medical Laboratory with the following objective of code of conduct, they include: -

I. To enable practitioner in Nigeria to maintain correct attitude universally expected of them.

II. To meet with the prescriptions of the medical laboratory science council

III. To ensure that all practitioners carry on their professional duties in a manner that earns the trust of the patient and the respect of the society for the profession.

IV. To let the public know what they can expect from practitioner.

Duration of training

The programmed is for two calendar year having four (4) semesters

Certificate to be obtained
At the end of two year training, the student will obtained a certificate in Medical Laboratory Assistant

Entry requirements
The candidate must possess a minimum of three 3 O level credits in not more than two sitting at SSCE, NECO and NABTEB including Biology, English and at least a pass in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

The result obtained should be within five years prior to registration with (MLSCN) Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Duration of training
The programmed shall last for three calendar year having six semesters

Certificate to be obtained
At the end of the training the candidate shall obtain a Diploma Certificate in (MLT).

Entry Requirement
The candidate shall possess a minimum of four credit passes at least not more than two sitting at SSCE|NECO|NABTEB including English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and atleast a pass in Physics.

QUALIFICATION OF TRAINERS The minimum qualification of trainers must be a university degree in MLS (BSC, BMLS) Associate Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (AMLSCN) in relevant discipline. 

D. Pharmacy Technicians

This is a full-time course undertaken for three (3) years, accredited by the College's academic board and the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN).

The School is made up of the Dean, School of Pharmaceutical Studies, the Head of Pharmacy Technician Department and other member staff. It has classrooms and a well equipped and spacious laboratory.

A combination of lectures on campus, laboratory practicals and industrial training prepares graduates for a variety of employment opportunities in private and public hospitals and Pharmacies.

To train suitably qualified persons in the basic knowledge of handling simple medicines for use at grass-root level, under the supervision of qualified registered and licensed pharmacists.

To train suitable persons to the level of rendering assistance to registered pharmacists.

Entry requirement:
In addition to the College's minimum entry requirements candidate must at least four (4) credits in Chemistry, Biology, English language, and Mathematics in WAEC or NECO or at not more than two sitting. 


Gombe State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Kaltungo has been accredited (NBTE)to admit students into National Diploma in Environmental Health Technology (EHT) and Health Information Management (HIM).
