Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Becomes the Most Sought After Agency for Third-Party Examinations Nationwide.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has continued to be one of the most sought after agencies today for the conduct of third-party examinations in Nigeria.

The agency has been conducting series of examinations for many government agencies, multinational companies and other corporate organizations in Nigeria for scholarship and for professional qualifications assessments besides its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The renewed interest in the Board by organizations for it to conduct third-party examinations is not unexpected given the big strides made by the Board in the areas of ICT, inclusiveness, and capacity building among others.

Interestingly, the vigorous patronage of the Board by such organizations for their sundry examinations which has nearly quadrupled since 2016 is due largely to inclusiveness and improved services.

The Board has made it clear that as a government agency, it would continue to charge fees that cover only the cost of the examination without regard for profit.

The Board’s primary objective in this connection is to showcase its competence and at the same time demonstrate that if government agencies are properly managed, they can offer effective and much more secured services that are seen to be the exclusive preserve of the private sector. Some organizations that had partnered with the Board in the area of assessment include the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) etc.

Proponents of privatization would always argue that government is not a good business entity. This basically owes to the alleged inexperience and inefficiency associated with public organizations. The impression is that the quality of service in the public sector is slow and employees are mostly not held accountable for their actions and inactions. Most unfortunately, it is believed that public organizations in Nigeria are removed from the high ideals of public service and that their comportment portrays their inadequacies and hence the constant demand for their outright sale. Most unfortunately, it is believed that public organizations in Nigeria are removed from the high ideals of public service and that their comportment portrays their inadequacies and hence the constant demand for their outright sale.

This is absolutely wrong given the positive narrative from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). In JAMB, the reverse is the case. The attitude in the Board is that of taking absolute responsibility and ensuring that the public gets much more value from government. It is about competition and surpassing expectations devoid of the private sector mentality of profit making. The operations of the Board are carried out under a very competitive atmosphere with staff consistently given the best of training in its core mandates. This explains why it is standing tall among its peers globally and is seen as a leading light in the conduct of CBT especially for large scale examinations.

Examination is a business of trust, transparency, inclusiveness and accountability. The Board has demonstrated sufficiently all these with the opening of its doors to public criticism. It will not be out of place to say that the upsurge in the demand for its services is perfectly captured in the word of Warren Buffet when he said, ‘’Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: Integrity, Intelligence and energy. And if you don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.
