IAUE Management Reaffirms Commitment to Welfare of Indigent Students

Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, IAUE Reaffirmed its Commitment to the Welfare of Indigent Students by Building Infrastructures in the University.

The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of indigent students in the university by taking their plight into consideration in the building of subsequent infrastructures in the university.
This is to reduce the challenges they face in accessing such facilities in the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, said this when a delegation of Rivers State students with disabilities paid a courtesy call on the management, yesterday.

Professor Ndimele while expressing happiness with the students in their quest for higher education despite the fact that they are physically challenged, noted that every situation in life is an opening for discovery of personal potentials.

He insisted that handicap is not a challenge to anyone who is determined to succeed, and urged them to explore all opportunities to serve the society with their education.

He stated that the university already offers special consideration to physically challenged students during admission processes, while also disclosing that management is already working on a scheme for indigent students in the university to alleviate their challenges.
He also promised to forward the group's request for scholarships to the university council for consideration.

He, however, regretted that an earlier scheme which afforded indigent students the opportunity to work and study in the university was abused by most of the beneficiaries because they sold the slots that were given to them, thereby defeating the objective.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Pius Kiebel, who commended the vice-chancellor and his team for the glaring infrastructural and human capacity development in the place, also thanked him for granting them the audience to present their demands.

Lamenting the challenges they face in accessing facilities in public institutions,, he appealed to the management to consider their plight during the construction of new hostels, classrooms, and administrative offices.

He also appealed for scholarships and jobs to enable them continue with their studies because of the economic situation in the country, and promised that the group was willing to partner with the university in whatever capacity it could.
