Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB Computer Based Test, CBT Owner Discloses the Reasons Why He Cheated in 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

The Proprietor, Blue Ocean Technology (BOT), Dutse, Abuja, Mr. Uche Newton, has stated that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has grown to become a leading light in the campaign to entrench accountability, equity and fairness as all Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres are given equal treatment by the Board.

He attributed this new orientation to the determination, zeal and commitment of the Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede.

Speaking to our correspondent, Mr. Newton recalled that when he breached the extant code of conduct laid down by the Board, the Registrar insisted on his being punished accordingly irrespective of all the pressure from the high and mighty.

The proprietor said he learnt valuable lessons from the incident. He added that there were indications that some of the unwholesome practices such as registration irregularities and examination infractions perpetuated by some Computer- Based Test (CBT) centres during the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) might not be unconnected to the pressure mounted by parents to “help” candidates examination.

He said that parents, friends and even candidates mount pressure to help their loved ones to perpetuate examination malpractice during the 2019 UTME.

Mr. Newton pointed out that monetary consideration should not be the overriding motive for setting up Computer-Based Test centres stressing that the sole aim of setting up centre across the country should be to bring their services to the doorsteps of candidates and other clients.

Similarly, he commended JAMB for putting in place technology that monitors all the centres simultaneously.

He said, “I know that many of us still think that it is too good to be true that a system in Nigeria could work so perfectly. Severally, during the examination, I was called to address certain challenges I didn't even notice but which were seen through the CCTV system in the Board's headquarters.” On the issue of meting out appropriate sanctions on erring centres, Mr. Newton urged JAMB to fish out the bad eggs among CBT centres and punish them accordingly to serve as deterrent to others.

He admonished centre owners not to see the venture as a shortcut to riches adding that greed and avarice were the factors propelling some of the owners to indulge in unwholesome practices like conniving with unscrupulous elements who. ghostwrite examinations for lazy candidates.

He enjoined all stakeholders to key into the Board's campaign against examination malpractice adding that it would be regrettable if the current efforts by the Board are frustrated and the opportunity for restoration of our educational values and ethics is missed.

Mr. Newton described CBT centres involved in the act of cheating as unfortunate because the forum of CBT centre owners as consistently kicked against any act capable of dragging the name of the association in the mud, noting that, “The investment in a centre cannot be recovered overnight.” On his observations concerning the just concluded 2019 UTME, Mr. Newton gave kudos to JAMB for the various innovations put in place for the 2019 Registration exercise such as the capturing of 10 fingers and live capturing of candidates' images. Continuing, the centre owner, whose centre has been used consecutively the past four years by the Board, rated the conduct of the 2019 UTME very high, as it was conducted with little or no hitches.

He Thereafter urged the Board to sanction the centres that were involved in examination malpractice so that only credible centres would thrive.

He appreciated the Registrar for opening many doors of opportunities for CBT centre owners and promised to ensure that the right things would be done from his own end.

He equally advised all stakeholders to cooperate with the Board in the task of delivering quality service why pleading with the public to support the Board especially by, allowing it ample time to view the footages and make informed decisions.
